THE NEED
To simulate a motor drive's transient thermal performance and determine its transient ratings
THE SOLUTION
Simplorer®
Mark Juds, Kevin Lee, and Mark Solveson of Eaton's Innovation Center used Ansoft's Simplorer to dynamically simulate a motor drive using both an electrical system model (power circuit, motor, control) and transient thermal model (electrical analogy, thermal resistance, thermal capacitance, air flow). "The transient thermal performance is critical in determining the transient ratings for the motor drive," according to Juds in a presentation he gave at a recent Ansoft Automotive Electromechanical Simulation Workshop. Future work will include verifying the transient thermal model against tests and using it to determine the transient ratings of the drive.
