Maxwell 2D/3D for magnetic sensors
Related Media
ELDEC Corporation, a Crane Aerospace & Electronics company, designs and manufactures electronic and electromechanical products for demanding aerospace and defense applications. Known for its position indication and control systems, battery-charging systems, true mass fuel-flow systems, and high- and low-voltage power supplies, ELDEC's products are in use on all major U.S. and European military and commercial aircraft.
THE NEED
To design reliable aerospace magnetic sensors that can operate over wide temperature extremes, function normally in very high electromagnetic interference (EMI) fields, endure high vibration and shock loads, and work reliably in ice, sand, dust, oils, caustic fluids, and other elements.
THE SOLUTION
Maxwell® 2D and 3D
Ultimately, ELDEC selected Ansoft's Maxwell software because the technology is highly accurate, easy to use, and capable of some interesting extended operations.
For example, ELDEC decided to design a sensor that could be assembled without any need for calibration. This would lead to reduced production costs and to a potentially more reliable unit. By using Maxwell, ELDEC discovered new methods, and the ELDEC product is selling very well today as an inexpensive, high signal-to-noise-ratio product.
"Before we selected Maxwell," said ELDEC sensor designer Kevin Woolsey, "we evaluated all the products on the market in the late 1980s. We selected Maxwell because of its front-end functionality. Today, I believe the product is as good or better than other products out there because of its ease in modeling."
"The bottom line is [that] the manufacturer gains a higher profit margin while the customer gains a high-quality product and a reasonable time to market," added Woolsey, referring to computer-aided technology. "I don't see any other way that is as cost effective or more accurate than this method."
