International Rectifier (IR) is a world leader in power-management technology that improves functionality, speed, and portability in information technology and other end products. IR's analog ICs, advanced-circuit devices, power systems, and components enable Internet hardware to gain speed and reliability, allow portable electronics to run longer off a single charge, improve automotive fuel efficiency, and cut energy consumption in home appliances and industrial motors.

THE NEED
To model the pertinent aspects of a high-side driver

THE SOLUTION
Simplorer®

International Rectifier (IR) has a family of Hi-Side drivers targeted at 12V automotive systems. These driver ICs are known as IPS (Intelligent Power Switch). Each IC consists of a hi-side N-Chan power MOSFET that will shut down under-over current and over-temperature conditions. The driver also reports fault status.

David Divins, a Field Application Engineer at IR, used Simplorer to model a system including electrical, thermal, and mechanical effects, including an IC driver, heat sink, and DC motor load.

"Simplorer has the capability to model the pertinent aspects of the driver and to characterize and compare models using product datasheets," said Divins. "Results from this type of simulation can be used to make appropriate system design decisions."
