Maxwell 2D/3D for an inline permanent magnet ISA
Related Media
Light Engineering (LE) is a leading developer and manufacturer of the highest efficiency and highest power-density-to-cost ratio motors and generators in the industry. LE products are emerging in such applications as electric vehicle, military, marine, and power-generation markets.
THE NEED
To resolve severe torque cogging, predict proximity effect losses, and cure rotor-related heating failures
THE SOLUTION
Maxwell® 2D, Maxwell 3D, Optimetrics™
Andy Hirzel, Director of Magnetic Design, Light Engineering, used Maxwell 3D to design an inline permanent magnet ISA for use with a diesel engine powertrain system. He also used Ansoft's Optimetrics™ and transient solvers to model torque cogging, eddy-current loss, proximity-effect loss, bearing preload, output torque, phase inductance, and risk of demagnetization. Hirzel achieved a rated performance goal of 60 kW at >94% efficiency and peak torque density of >40N-m/liter.
