Product Overview

The design of magnetic components, such as transformers and inductors, directly influences the size, performance, and cost of power supplies and converters used in computers, automobiles, personal communication devices, aircraft, and other technologies. Traditionally, companies have relied on build-test methodologies and experience to design power converters. With PExprt, users can quickly and virtually design inductors, transformers, coupled inductors, and flyback-type components.

PExprt determines the optimum core size, core material, wire gauge, number of turns, and gap length from the user-entered electrical specifications of the component. PExprt greatly aids the design process by allowing hundreds of "what if" calculations to be performed in seconds. PExprt calculates eddy-current effects, gap loss, and temperature and automatically generates a behavioral model from the design for export to Simplorer for system design validation.

Design Flow

With PExprt™, users can:

  • Design inductors, transformers, coupled inductors, flyback, planar components, toroidal structures and integrated magnetics
  • Calculate:
    • AC resistance (skin, proximity, and gap effects)
    • Magnetizing inductance
    • Capacitive effects (interwinding and intrawinding)
    • Losses for particular waveforms
    • Temperature distribution
  • Evaluate:
    • Fringing flux on the winding losses
    • Interleaving, winding stack or wire positioning
    • Core proximity
  • Generate models:
    • Components with center taps
    • Components with shielding windings
    • Components with solid wires, foils, twisted wires, PCB tracks, Litz wires, and square-shaped wires
    • Components with multi-sector bobbins
    • Bi-filar and tri-filar wires
    • User-defined winding strategy (interleaving application)
